welcome to mod.zool.disco
mod.zool.disco. is in essence, a vibe. it is the feeling you get when something rocks. i guess mod.zool.disco. as a feeling could be ascribed to many things, but to me it most clearly finds itself in music. through my djing hobby i hope to cull and promote all things mod.zool. :)
i came up with an idea this summer to start a quarterly series based upon this notion of mod.zool.disco. it will be designated as m.z.d./year/quarter/. so for example, the initial release will be mzd04Q3. so Q3 will highlight tracks that came out (or in some cases i became aware of/discovered) during this past summer. Q4 will highlight this coming fall, etc. the compilations will be an eclectic mix of whatever is tickling my fancy at the time. in general it will include tracks from many genres such as prog, breaks, acid, tech-house, & electro. but it isnt really about genres or labels, its just about things that rock. i hope you all enjoy this onoging project as much as i have so far, and no doubt, will in the future.
the etymology of the phrase mod.zool.disco is rather amusing. it combines two words and one abreviation: mod;disco; and zool. "zool." is short for zoological. as the story goes my grandfather was reading a word from the dictionary to my dad and/or his siblings one day several years ago when they were children. the word in question was zooligical in nature and was designated as such by the dictionary by the abbreviation "zool." well I suppose he chose to state aloud the abbreviation instead of saying its full counterpart, zooligical. the kids loved the way "zool" sounded and it became kind of a catch phrase. it was synonomous with cool. the way "mod" was cool in the 1960s and the way "disco" was cool in the 1970s. these three words were combined by my dad & his siblings into the uber phrase: "mod.zool.disco", the penultimate of cool. i first heard this phrase at one of our infamous family (dad's side that is) gatherings at christmas. the phrase i remember being uttered in a most sarcastic tone after the opening of someones gift, while hoisting the gift up in the air for all to behold. the gift was probably some golf balls, or black socks, or maybe even a giant old army ordinance fishing lure. these gifts, with the exception of the lure, are the antithesis of mod.zool.disco. sometimes though it gets used in a serious manner, such as when it was the 80s and someone got a VCR. that was mod.zool, and that's when i knew what it meant.
more to come....
cheers,
